Understanding Oily Skin: Advantages, Disadvantages & Skincare Tips

Oily skin is one of the most typical skin types. It has challenges and lots of benefits. The first step to manage your oily skin properly is to understand what oily skin is.

What Is Oily Skin?

Oily skin happens when the sebaceous glands in the skin produces too much sebum, which is an oily substance meant to keep the skin hydrated and protected. Sebum is healthy and necessary; you just want to avoid too much of it, because it can lead to clogged pores, blackheads, acne, etc.

Advantages of Oily Skin

Oily skin isn’t all bad! In fact, oily skin has some natural positive characteristics:

  1. Delays Signs of Aging

The natural oils keep your skin flexible and hydrated, and this can keep fine lines and wrinkles from showing their age.

2. Natural Glow

Most people with oily skin have a healthy, dewy glow and radiance without having to use a highlighter or other product.

3. Stronger Skin Barrier

Sebum offers some protection from environmental toxins/stressors/negatives and may make skin barrier much stronger.

Disadvantages of Oily Skin

Having Oily Skin Great things are accompanied by some difficulty:

  1. Shininess

Too much oil can leave your skin looking shiny during the day, particularly in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin).

2. Congested Pores

Oily skin is more susceptible to clogged pores and potentially leads to blackheads, whiteheads, and acne.

3. Difficulty Applying Makeup

On oily skin, makeup can slide off or wear away more quickly, especially in humid weather.

Oily Skin Care Tips

To maintain oil-free and healthy skin, consider the following practices:

  1. Wash Face Twice a Day

Use a gentle foaming cleanser in the morning and at night, to remove dirt and excess oil without making your skin too dry.

2. Do Not Skip Moisturizer

Even oily skin should be hydrated. Use lightweight, oil-free, and non-comedogenic moisturizers.

3. Consider a Toner

Toners that are alcohol-free and contain ingredients such as, witch hazel and/or niacinamide, can help control oil and tighten pores.

4. Exfoliate on a Weekly

Basis Using a mild exfoliator 1-2 times per week will help to remove dead skin to reduce breakouts. Salicylic acid is the best option for oily skin.

5. Pick the Right Sunscreen

(with SPF) Make sure you always select a broad-spectrum SPF, preferably a matte finish or gel-based formula that has been designed for oil/a-cne prone skin.

6. Avoid Washing

Too Often Over-washing can only cause the skin to produce more oil. Wash your skin 1-2 times per day and if needed, blot in between.
